RELIGION IN DIASPORA AN APPROACH TO THE GLOBAL MIGRATION

    Get PDF

Self-perceived cultural competence. A cross-sectional study about nurses' awareness and behavior

    Get PDF
Background: Cultural competence is a valuable and intangible heritage of knowledge, relationships and identity. Cultural competence is fundamental in nursing: sharing the objectives of all patients - not only foreigners - promotes patient's participation in healthcare and supports nurses' professional development, enhancing the intellectual capital that guides quality care. The aim of this study is to evaluate nurses' self-perceived cultural competence. Study design: This is a cross-sectional study. Methods: A self-administered cultural-competence questionnaire was used. Nurses working in hospitals and territorial healthcare settings in Rome, Italy, were involved in this study, from March 2017 to February 2018. Results: This study involved 192 nurses. The mean age was 46.2 ± 7.9. Most of the nurses (77.6%) were women. The nurses' mean work experience was 21.4 ± 8.8 years; 65.1% of them had never attended any type of course concerning multiculturalism. The mean score of the nurses' cultural competence was 4.19 ± 0.57 (range = 2.75-5.71). In all, 41.7% of the nurses did not consider themselves neither competent nor incompetent. Conclusion: The results show that nurses have an acceptable level of cultural competence, slightly higher in the territorial context

Copts, Islamists and Jews:Gender, minorities, hybridity (and its limits) in two novellas by Bahaa Abdelmegid

Bahaa Abdelmegid's novellas Saint Theresa and Sleeping with Strangers feature a range of intertwined relations: sexual, commercial, as neighbours, and as colleagues between Jews, Christians and Muslims in Egyptian society since 1967. This paper explores the implications of Abdelmegid's portrayal of Egyptian society, in which he celebrates its internal diversity whilst simultaneously warning of the dangers and disruptions of 'too much' hybridity and of over-familiarity with the 'Other'. I argue that Abdelmegid's Egyptian masculine is fragile, brittle, and under threat from a dissolute West and an extremist and inauthentic Islam. Abdelmegid articulates a modern warning to this frail masculinity, as well as to a more stable and worldly-wise feminine, about the dangers of undisciplined relationships with both Western culture and religious fundamentalism, both of which stray away from a real Egypt he constructs.

Secularism, Assimilation and the Crisis of Multiculturalism

Jansen’s book shows how even the most sophisticated academic views defending secularism and assimilation remain rooted in unexamined ‘modernist dichotomies’ inherited from French (and to some extent, European) modernism. Rainer Bauboeck, European University Institute|"For anyone who seeks to understand the roots of the "deepening crisis of multiculturalism" in Europe, Yolande Jansen's book is required reading. Jansen's brilliant and insightful analysis draws on a variety of fields and lucidly shows how the crisis is a crisis in modernity. Subtly weaving Proust into the argument, she brings a dry subject to life." -- Brian Klug, University of Oxfor

    Secularism or Democracy?

    Get PDF
Established institutions and policies of dealing with religious diversity in liberal democratic states are increasingly under pressure. Practical politics and political theory is caught in a trap between a fully secularized state (strict separation of state and politics from completely privatized religions based on an idealized version of American denominationalism or French republicanism) and neo-corporatist or 'pillarized' regimes of selective cooperation between states and organized religions. The book offers an original, comprehensive conceptual, theoretical and practical approach to problems of governance of religious diversity from a multi-disciplinary perspective combining moral and political philosophy, constitutional law, history, sociology and anthropology of religions and comparative institutionalism. Proposals of associative democracy - a moderately libertarian, flexible version of democratic institutional pluralism - are introduced and scrutinized whether they can serve as as plausible third way overcoming the inherent deficiencies of the predominant models in theory and practice.

An evaluation of the compatibility of mindfulness and ethos in the Irish Catholic primary school

    Get PDF
Mindfulness has exploded in popularity across several elements of society, including healthcare, education and commerce. This growth in the practice is supported by an increasing body of research on the benefits of mindfulness for physical and mental wellbeing. However, no significant research on this concept has been conducted in relation to Catholic education, and the implications mindfulness practice may have on the characteristic spirit of Catholic schools. Within this context, this study aims to evaluate the compatibility of mindfulness and ethos in Irish Catholic primary schools. It first maps out the conditions of religious belief and experience in the contemporary European context, drawing on the work of Charles Taylor, Lieven Boeve, Michael Paul Gallagher, Tomáš Halík and Grace Davie. It then investigates the Buddhist origins of mindfulness and how it evolved into a contemporary and popular Western phenomenon through the processes of Buddhist modernism. This includes delineating the different meanings attached to mindfulness and exploring the three distinctive strands of mindfulness operative today, and how this has interacted with Irish education. Following this, several criteria for a Catholic educational vision are developed through an analysis of key post-Conciliar documents on Catholic education and the framework for the distinctiveness of Catholic education offered by Thomas Groome. These evaluative criteria are applied to find that the Irish Catholic primary school has in mindfulness a resource that is potentially invaluable in supporting and vivifying the patterns of belief, conduct and practice that embody this vision of life, which is Catholic ethos. This compatibility with Catholic ethos is demonstrated in the contribution of mindfulness to holistic education, as preparation for prayer and as a contemplative activity, as praeparatio evangelica and in fostering an other-oriented outlook which is committed to the common good. The study contributes to contemporary research into mindfulness in Catholic education both nationally and internationally, enhancing clarity on how and when mindfulness is compatible with Catholic ethos. The recommendations are of interest to patrons, educational practitioners and professional developers in Irish Catholic education.N

Exploring the indigenous religious identities of African adolescents in selected South African secondary schools

    Get PDF
This study was undertaken to explore the indigenous religious identities of African adolescents in selected secondary schools in Mpumalanga province, South Africa. The empirical investigation used a qualitative, phenomenological collective case study design. The framework for the study was provided by constructivist theory and African indigenous knowledge and was justified by an extensive literature study. Purposive sampling was used to select forty-two learners from Grades 8 to 11, thirty- three of whom were from African initiated churches, eight belonged to various Christian denominations and one was an atheist. The most significant finding was that the indigenous religious identities of adolescents are not adequately accommodated and supported in South African secondary schools. Accordingly, recommendations were made for affirming adolescents’ indigenous religious identities in the implementation of RE in the classroom.Lolu cwaningo lwenziwa ngenhloso yokuhlaziya nokuhlolisisa izimo nezici zobunjalo bentsha empisholo esesigabeni sokuthomba (adolescents) elandela izinkolo zomdabu noma zendabuko efunda ezikoleni ezingamasekhondari ezikhethiweyo esifundazweni saseMpumalanga, eNingizimu Afrika.
